How to Make a Patio Umbrella Cover

A patio umbrella is a great way to add shade and style to your outdoor space. But if you don't have a cover for your umbrella, it can quickly become faded and damaged by the sun and rain. Making a patio umbrella cover is a simple and inexpensive way to protect your investment and keep your umbrella looking its best for years to come.

Materials You'll Need:

To make a patio umbrella cover, you will need the following materials:

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that is UV-resistant and water-resistant. Sunbrella is a popular choice for patio umbrella covers, but there are many other options available.
  • Thread: Choose a thread that is UV-resistant and matches the color of your fabric.
  • Elastic cord: This will be used to cinch the cover around the umbrella.
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

Instructions:

Follow these steps to make a patio umbrella cover:

  1. Measure the diameter of your umbrella. This will be the width of the cover.
  2. Measure the height of your umbrella from the top of the pole to the bottom of the canopy. This will be the length of the cover.
  3. Cut two pieces of fabric to the width and length you measured in steps 1 and 2.
  4. Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 6-inch opening on one side for turning.
  5. Turn the cover right side out and press it flat.
  6. Fold the raw edge of the opening under by 1/2 inch and press it. Fold it under again by 1/2 inch and press it again. Topstitch the opening closed.
  7. Cut a piece of elastic cord to the circumference of your umbrella pole. Thread the elastic cord through the casing you created in step 6.
  8. Put the cover on your umbrella and cinch the elastic cord around the pole to secure it.

Tips:

Here are a few tips for making a patio umbrella cover:

  • Use a heavy-duty fabric that is UV-resistant and water-resistant.
  • Make sure to measure your umbrella carefully before cutting the fabric.
  • Use a sewing machine with a UV-resistant thread.
  • Be sure to leave an opening for turning the cover right side out.
  • Fold the raw edge of the opening under twice and topstitch it closed for a professional finish.
  • Use a piece of elastic cord to cinch the cover around the umbrella pole.

By following these instructions, you can easily make a patio umbrella cover that will protect your umbrella from the elements and keep it looking its best for years to come.
