How to Lay a Flagstone Patio with Concrete Block

Creating a flagstone patio with concrete block is a relatively simple project that can add beauty and value to your home. With careful planning and preparation, you can create a stunning outdoor living space that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Flagstone
  • Concrete blocks
  • Sand
  • Mortar
  • Polymeric sand
  • Level
  • Tamper
  • Grout float

Step 1: Prepare the Base

The first step is to prepare the base for your patio. This involves clearing the area of any debris, leveling the ground, and compacting it. Once the ground is level and compacted, you can start laying the concrete blocks.

Step 2: Lay the Concrete Blocks

Begin by laying the concrete blocks in a straight line around the perimeter of your patio. Use a level to make sure that the blocks are level and that they are spaced evenly apart. Once the perimeter is complete, you can start filling in the center of the patio with concrete blocks.

Step 3: Set the Flagstone

Once the concrete blocks are in place, you can start setting the flagstone. Begin by placing a layer of sand on the concrete blocks. The sand will help to level the flagstone and provide a stable base. Once the sand is in place, you can start laying the flagstone.

Step 4: Grout the Joints

Once the flagstone is set, you need to grout the joints between the stones. To do this, mix up a batch of mortar and apply it to the joints using a grout float. Be sure to work the mortar into the joints completely and remove any excess mortar from the surface of the flagstone.

Step 5: Sweep in Polymeric Sand

Once the mortar has dried, you need to sweep in polymeric sand. Polymeric sand is a special type of sand that helps to lock the flagstone in place and prevent weeds from growing between the stones. To apply polymeric sand, simply sweep it into the joints between the flagstone and use a broom to brush it into place.

Step 6: Enjoy Your New Patio

Once the polymeric sand has set, your new flagstone patio will be complete. You can now enjoy your beautiful new outdoor living space with family and friends.
