How to Make New Cushion Covers for Outdoor Furniture

Refreshing your outdoor furniture with new cushion covers is an easy and affordable way to revamp your outdoor space. Whether your cushions are faded, stained, or simply in need of an update, making new covers is a quick and satisfying project. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to create custom cushion covers for your outdoor furniture:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Outdoor-grade fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
  • Thread
  • Zipper (optional)

Step 1: Measure Your Cushions

Use a measuring tape to determine the length, width, and height of your cushions. Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seam allowances.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Cut two pieces of fabric according to the measurements you obtained in Step 1. If your fabric has a pattern, ensure that it is aligned correctly when cutting.

Step 3: Create the Zipper Opening (Optional)

If you want to add a zipper to your cushion cover for easy removal, sew it along one of the edges of one fabric piece. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the zipper.

Step 4: Sew the Sides

Place the two fabric pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning. Use a sewing machine or hand stitch the seams.

Step 5: Turn and Press

Turn the cushion cover right side out through the opening you left. Use an iron to press the seams flat.

Step 6: Sew the Opening

Hand stitch or machine sew the opening closed. If you have added a zipper, skip this step.

Step 7: Insert the Cushions

Insert your cushions into the newly made covers. Your refreshed outdoor furniture is now ready to enjoy!

Tips for Success:

  • Use an outdoor-grade fabric that is resistant to fading, moisture, and mildew.
  • Consider using a heavy-duty thread to prevent seams from tearing.
  • Reinforce the corners of the cushion covers with extra stitching for added durability.
  • If you are not confident in your sewing skills, consider hiring a seamstress or upholsterer.
  • Regularly clean and maintain your cushion covers to extend their lifespan.
