How to Make Cushion Covers for Outdoor Furniture

When it comes to sprucing up your outdoor living space, a few new cushion covers can make a big difference. Not only will they protect your cushions from the elements, but they can also add a splash of color and style to your patio or deck. Best of all, they're relatively easy to make yourself. In this article, we'll walk you through the essential aspects of making cushion covers for outdoor furniture.

Choose the Right Fabric

The type of fabric you choose for your cushion covers will depend on a few factors, including the climate in your area, how often you use your outdoor furniture, and your personal style. If you live in a humid climate, you'll want to choose a fabric that is resistant to mildew and fading. If you use your outdoor furniture frequently, you'll want to choose a durable fabric that can withstand wear and tear. And if you're looking for a specific look, you'll want to choose a fabric that complements the style of your outdoor furniture.

Measure Your Cushions

Once you've chosen a fabric, you'll need to measure your cushions to determine how much fabric you need. To do this, measure the length, width, and height of each cushion. Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seams. For example, if your cushion is 18 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 4 inches high, you would need a piece of fabric that is 20 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 6 inches high.

Cut the Fabric

Once you've measured your cushions and determined how much fabric you need, you can cut the fabric. Be sure to cut the fabric straight, and allow for a 1-inch seam allowance around all edges. For example, if your cushion is 18 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 4 inches high, you would cut a piece of fabric that is 20 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 6 inches high.

Sew the Cushion Covers

Once you've cut the fabric, you can sew the cushion covers. Start by sewing the two side seams together, using a 1-inch seam allowance. Then, fold the top and bottom edges of the fabric over by 1 inch and press them down. Fold the edges over again by 1 inch and press them down again. Topstitch the edges down close to the fold. Finally, insert your cushion into the cover and enjoy!
